The Village Baroque church

Welcome to the village baroque church in Uhyst on the Spree.

As early as 1342, a chapel independent of Klix stood here. Under the Lord of Metzrad, the chapel was rebuilt in 1466. Finally, under the Lord of Nostitz, the first Protestant wooden church was built after Uhyst adopted the Reformation in 1551 and became Protestant. The first Protestant pastor of Uhyst, who was directly consecrated by the reformer Bugenhagen, was named Donatus Moeller.

The present church in Uhyst on the Spree River was built between 1711 and 1716 under the Lord of Metzrad. The tower and the addition of the pews were not constructed until 1726-1735.

In 1853, a fire broke out in the Uhyst church. However, the fire was quickly extinguished. The spire was altered in 1869 and 1967 – until finally, in 1962, the church tower received its current appearance.

Work on the church began in 1984. An electronic bell-ringing system was installed, and the carpenters stabilized the church tower using large turnbuckles.

Three bells, Angelika, Gloria and Irene, call to the people of Uhyst:

  • Hear the Good News (Angelika),
  • Live to the glory of God (Gloria),
  • Keep peace among yourselves (Irene)!

The interior was altered in 1837 and 1893. Between 1946 and 1956, W. Rittsche from Dresden redesigned the interior. During the most recent reconstruction in 1993, the original Baroque interior was restored. The church was rededicated on November 6, 1994.
